Kenyatta University Student association has been in existence since 1970. However during Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy (2nd liberation) in the 90’s all student organizations were banned. This led to a mass protest from student but eventually all unions collapsed including KUSA. This went on until the year 2004 when the students decided to actively take part in matters affecting them. KUSA was then reborn and has been an instrumental part in the governance of the university.
KUSA continued to be the serving students association up to the current, however the introduction of university act in 2016 altered the popular vote system for the student governing council of KUSA while it retained the universal suffrage system for other elective seats which include the school congresses, hostel congresses, non-residents congresses and delegates who participate in electing the students governing council. Currently the KUSA is at 20th congress and 7th delegates’.
